How to Choose a Heavyweight Hoodie: Weight, Fabric & Fit Explained

Why GSM Matters When Buying a Hoodie
If you've ever compared two hoodies that look identical on the rack but feel completely different in your hands, the answer is almost certainly GSM — grams per square metre. GSM is the standard measure of fabric weight, and it's one of the most useful specs to look at when deciding how substantial a hoodie is going to feel.
As a rough guide:
- Under 280gsm — Lightweight. Thin, breathable, better suited to mild weather or layering underneath.
- 280–300gsm — Midweight. The most common range for everyday hoodies. Decent structure, but often feels thin after washing.
- 300gsm and above — Heavyweight. Noticeably thick, holds its shape, and has that satisfying weight when you pick it up.
Most budget hoodies sit under 260gsm range. At that weight the fabric can feel flimsy, pill quickly, and lose its structure after a few washes. If you want a hoodie that genuinely lasts and feels substantial, look for something above 350gsm.
The Sundaze Society Hoodies: 400gsm Cotton Fleece
All five of our core hoodies — By SNDZ, Effortless, Core, Smiley, and With Love — are made from 400gsm 100% cotton fleece. That puts them firmly in the heavyweight category.
Cotton fleece at 400gsm has a few characteristics worth knowing:
- It's dense. The fabric has real body and doesn't collapse on itself.
- It's 100% cotton. No polyester blending, which means it breathes naturally and softens further with each wash.
- It holds its shape. A heavier cotton fleece is less prone to stretching out at the cuffs and hem over time.
400gsm is the weight you'll find on premium branded hoodies that retail for significantly more. It's a meaningful jump from the 280–300gsm hoodies that dominate the mainstream market.
Understanding Fit: Oversized vs. Regular vs. Boxy
Weight gets a lot of attention, but fit is just as important for how a hoodie looks and feels to wear day to day.
Regular fit follows the body more closely — narrower through the chest and waist, shorter sleeves. Fine for layering under a jacket but can feel restrictive once you go up a weight class in fabric.
Oversized fit adds width through the body and often drops the shoulder seam lower. It's a deliberate design choice, not just sizing up. An oversized hoodie should look intentional — roomy without being shapeless.
Boxy fit is a subset of oversized: shorter in length, very wide, squared-off hem. Works well cropped or with high-waisted bottoms.
All Sundaze Society hoodies are cut with an oversized, relaxed silhouette. The dropped shoulders and generous body width are built into the pattern, so the fit reads the same across sizes. If you're between sizes and prefer a more relaxed look, size up; if you prefer something that's roomy but not too voluminous, stay true to size. See our Size Guide for detailed measurements.
The Five Hoodies: What Makes Each One Different
Same weight, same fabric, same fit — so what sets each style apart? It comes down to the details.
- By SNDZ Oversized Hoodie — The signature style. Clean and minimal with the SNDZ branding, designed as the everyday essential.
- Effortless Oversized Hoodie — Pared-back and unfussy. Exactly what the name suggests.
- The Core Hoodie — A foundational piece built to be worn constantly and washed repeatedly without losing its feel.
- The Smiley Hoodie — Graphic detail adds personality while keeping the same relaxed silhouette.
- With Love Hoodie — A softer graphic expression of the same heavyweight base.
All five share the same 400gsm cotton fleece construction and oversized cut. Choosing between them is a question of which colourway and detail speaks to you, not a trade-off in quality or build.
How to Care for a 400gsm Cotton Hoodie
Heavyweight cotton rewards a bit of care:
- Wash cold or on a gentle cycle to reduce shrinkage.
- Turn inside out before washing to protect any printed or embroidered details.
- Air dry where possible — high heat tumble drying can cause cotton to shrink and the fleece to pill over time.
- If tumble drying, use a low heat setting.
Cotton fleece also softens noticeably over the first several washes, so don't judge the final feel from the first wear.
